US Orders FAQ

We ship regularly to customers in the United States and want to be as transparent as possible about what to expect when your order crosses the border.


Do US orders pay tariffs on candles?

No. Candles are not subject to US tariffs at this time.

You will not be charged tariff duties simply for purchasing candles from Canada.


What changed with the de minimis exemption?

Previously, most US-bound orders under $800 value passed through customs without any additional processing.

Recent changes in US policy means that all packages entering the US must go through the formal customs entry process. As a result some courier companies may now apply processing or brokerage fees, even when no tariff or duty is owed. These fees are set by the courier, not by us.


What kind of fees might I see?

In some cases, US customers may be charged:

  • A courier processing or brokerage fee

  • Occasionally state sales tax, depending on location

These are not tariffs and are not charged by Sotto Voce Scents.

Typical processing fees, when applied, are usually modest ($5-$20), but they vary by courier and destination.


Will I always be charged extra fees?

No — many US orders still arrive without any additional charges.

However, because customs handling is outside our control, we can’t guarantee that a fee won’t be applied by the courier.


When would I be charged, if at all?

If a processing fee applies, it is usually:

  • Collected by the courier at delivery

  • Or invoiced shortly after delivery

We do not collect these fees at checkout.


Why don’t you include these fees upfront?

Courier processing fees:

  • Are inconsistent

  • Vary by carrier and destination

  • Are not predictable at checkout

Including them in advance would often overcharge customers, so we leave them to the courier if they apply.


Can I avoid courier fees?

While we can’t guarantee avoidance, customers sometimes find:

  • Orders shipped via postal services (rather than express couriers) are less likely to incur processing fees

  • Placing a single larger order rather than multiple small ones reduces repeated handling


Do you mark orders accurately?

Yes, we never under-declare or mislabel shipments. We:

  • Accurately declare all items

  • Use correct product classifications

  • Include accurate certificate of origin with each package

Can I refuse a shipment if a fee is applied?

Courier policies vary. If you have concerns about a fee:

  • Contact the courier directly for clarification

  • Reach out to us — we’re always happy to help explain what’s happening
